Martinsburg Police expanding foot patrols

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The Martinsburg Police Department want to get their officers in front of the public and address residents’ concerns.

That’s why they are continuing to increase foot patrols in parts of Martinsburg.

Foot patrols have already been doubled in the down town district with positive results according to business owners.

Police chief Maury Richards said during Panhandle Live Tuesday they are already adding patrols in other neighborhoods as well.

“We’re working on an initiative right now in the 100 block of south Kentucky (Ave.),”Richards said.

The expansion came after a citizen meeting with those living in the neighborhood who had some concerns they brought to the police.

“Six residents and Councilman (Ken) Collinson were involved,” Richards said. “We’re already out there, walking that neighborhood, meeting with the landlords.”

Richards says the additional patrols provide a constant presence and allow officers and citizens to connect on a personal level.

Richards hopes to continue to expand the patrols throughout the city.
