Martinsburg High Celebrates Black History Extravaganza

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. —  The Martinsburg High School Multicultural Club celebrated their 2nd annual Black History Month Extravaganza on Saturday.

The event featured a speech by a member of our local NAACP, musical presentations and dances, poetry from renouned local author, Earl Harriston, and a soul food tasting by Catering 2 Perfection.

Advisor to the Multicultural Club and Civics teacher at MHS, Celeste Brown, said they had a little under 100 guests, and they are already working to make next years event even bigger,

She said that it has been a phenomenal networking opportunity for herself and the students.

“We networked with one member already, Jamila Fleet-Jones – who is the President and CEO of Innovative Solutions Technology.  She gives out awards and scholarships to students and she wants to make this venue the spot where she gives out those awards,” she said excitedly.

Hunter Orrison, a senior at MHS and President of the Multicultural Club, said last year they put the event together in about 2 weeks, but this year they had more time to prepare – about 2 months.

“Everyone was saying great things about the performances and the way everything was set up, it was definitely an improvement from last year,” he said as the event started to wind down.

The extravaganza was just one of the many events celebrating Black history Month that Berkeley County Schools have hosted.
