MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — For the first time in nearly a decade, Sheriff’s Deputies from across three counties in the Eastern Panhandle were cross sworn in during a ceremony in Martinsburg Wednesday.

Officers told WEPM that there is a state mutual aid agreement but the cross swearing in would stream line the process in terms of the different departments from Berkeley, Morgan, and Jefferson counties working together.

Jefferson County Sheriff Pete Dougherty said the discussion to get officers cross sworn in was talked about for some time between the sheriffs’s in each department.

“We’ve talked about what we could do to enhance the service to the community,” said Dougherty. “And this was one of the things we thought we could do that would help the system for all the counties work better.”

Deputies unable to attend this morning’s ceremony will be sworn in by county clerks at a later time.
