Charles Town public meeting on Annexation Postponed

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — The Charles Town City Council had scheduled a public meeting on their plans to annex 2,600 acres of land in Jefferson County last night at 6:00 at Wright-Denny Intermediate School but it was cancelled.

The announcement of the cancellation of the meeting was posted on the city of Charles Town web page but not everyone was aware as few did show up to the school last night.

One resident who showed up for the meeting was Carolyn Franklin who is one of the part owners of Cassilis Farms which is located outside the city limits of Charles Town. She and other members of her farming community were looking to voice their concerns to the City Council as their property would be affected by the annexation.

“Our taxes would go up with no benefit,” said Franklin. “And we’ll be subject to town ordinances which as a working farm, it’s going to be a problem.”

The city of Charles Town says on their web site that a new time and date for the meeting has not been set yet and they will send a letter to all the property owners who live in the area proposed for annexation once it is scheduled.
