Berkeley Board of Education takes stand against Senate Bill 451

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The Berkeley County Board of Education has passed a resolution opposing Senate Bill 451, otherwise known as the omnibus education bill.

The resolution states that the board opposing the bill in its “current form” and that “in order to provide the best education possible for all students, all public education money needs to remain to support public schools”.

Superintendent Manny Arvon tells WEPM that the board does not oppose everything listed in the bill, but there are some issues too big to ignore.

“When we have to compete with Maryland and Virginia and those salaries, we need to level the playing field,” said Arvon. “Right now, its hard to say we are going to give you this but during the same time siphon off some public moneys that will prohibit us from reaching that level.”

The resolution also expresses concern that Berkeley County citizens should have say as to whether or not they support the creation of charter schools locally.
