State Auditor unveils new transparency website

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – West Virginia government will be more accessible after State Auditor JB McCuskey unveiled a new transparency website in Martinsburg on Monday.

The site, which was developed with technology firm OpenGov, will allow visitors to monitor how tax dollars are being spent across state agencies.

“All of the money that comes into Charleston is the peoples’ money,” McCuskey said on MetroNews affiliate WEPM ahead of the unveiling. “It is every person in West Virginia’s right and duty to know and look how their money’s being spent.”

The site also has an interface so users can get answers directly from the State Auditor’s office via direct email.

McCuskey said the biggest hang up was a lack of good data.

Different agencies had been submitting information to the Auditor’s Office using different criteria, creating an issue with accuracy and consistency.

McCuskey said it is being corrected and will improve moving forward.

“We are honing the way the data gets into the website,” he said. “And this wouldn’t have happened had we not undertaken this exercise.”

The website is up and running now at westvirginia.opengov.com.
