Site prep continues on Weis-anchored retail center

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Work continues on land at the northwest corner of the I-81 and Route 45 interchange.

The site of a new retail center in Martinsburg.

The area is notorious for heavy traffic, with concerns that will only get worse on Apple Harvest Drive (Route 45) with continued development.

“Phase one is what you see now; all of the site work, the roads, the pads and so forth,” Martinsburg City Manager Mark Baldwin said on Wednesday’s ‘Panhandle Live’. “The second phase would continue that roadway as a connector to Delmar (Orchard Road).  We’re starting to hear a little bit about individuals looking at the outparcels, nothing solid to announce, but that’s just a good sign that businesses are starting to look.”

Plans posted by firm Metro Commercial show a 66,000 square-foot Weis grocery store. Next to the Weis store is a proposed HomeGoods.

The Massachusetts-based chain reportedly in the works for Martinsburg specializes in furniture, home decor, bedding, kitchen and seasonal items. HomeGoods is owned by TJX Companies, which also owns TJ Maxx at The Commons and Marshall’s currently under construction in Ranson.

Also included in the unnamed Martinsburg center’s plans are several smaller buildings for retail, businesses or restaurants and a Weis Gas n’ Go Station.

The listing says Weis and HomeGoods will open in the fall of 2020.
