MARTINSBURG, W.Va. –-The Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority (BCSWA), with support from Apple Valley Waste, is pleased to announce the 2023 – 2024 “Operation Greenlid” School Recycling Contest.
According to a press release from the Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority, Operation Greenlid is a voluntary school recycling contest conducted for the past 8 years where participating schools can fill 96-gallon recycling totes provided by Apple Valley Waste. Once filled with recycling materials, volunteers from the participating school deliver the totes to the Berkeley County Recycling Program. Each tote is tallied at the end of the school year.
Operation Greenlid was established in 2015 by the BCSWA and Apple Valley Waste to encourage voluntary student participation in proper solid waste management, roadside litter reduction and alternatives to landfilling. The program offers volunteers the opportunity to educate students on how to take charge of their own environment by making a positive effort to create a cleaner, more aesthetic place in which to live.
Effective August 21, 2023, any Berkeley County public school, private school, classroom or school-based organization can participate in the challenge. Winners will be determined at the end of the school year by the BCSWA. Placement will be based on the highest number of totes returned filled with recyclables by the school to the Grapevine Road Recycling Center throughout the 2023-2024 school year. First place will be $500.00 in cash, 2nd place will be $300.00 in cash and 3rd place will be $200.00 in cash.
