Parks and Rec Board hear disc golf proposal

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Disc Golf players in the Eastern Panhandle are looking to grow the sport’s popularity with help from the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation Board.

The board heard a proposal recently for a new 9-hole course to be constructed on the west side of Poor House Farm Park near Tuscarora Creek.

Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks & Recreation Board Executive Director Steve Catlett said on WEPM’s “The Rec Report” the course would be an attraction for out-of-town and out-of-state visitors who are young or are just beginners.

“What it does, in the sense of disc golf, it gets younger players playing and we might be able to get school groups out there to play,” said Catlett. “And then, as those kids get older and start to enjoy it, they’ll continue to use the course as they get older.”

Catlett add that the board was impressed by the idea and that the project would not come with a hefty price tag.
