NHL’s Capitals will renovate Martinsburg hockey rinks

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A project to renovate a pair of outdoor inline hockey rinks in Martinsburg is getting spearheaded by the defending Stanley Cup Champions.

It’s all apart of an initiative from the NHL’s Washington Capitals to reach one million youth by building at least 20 rinks in the areas around Washington, D.C.

Director of Community Relations with the Capitals Peter Robinson told board members the project will be a  $80,000-$100,000 investment.

The two rinks, located at Oatesdale Park along Tavern Road in Martinsburg, will receive new ProWall boards, branding. Also a scoreboard featuring the red, white, and blue of the Capitals is in the works.

Deputy Director of the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation Board Lauren Mumaw says the project could take at least 3 weeks to complete once construction begins.

“They’re going to be taking down the walls to both of the rinks and then replacing them with brand new nets and boards,” said Mumaw. “So, its basically going to be, the same flooring but expanding from the smaller rink.”

She adds that this is the first type of partnership between the board and a professional sports team.
