New Berkeley County Schools Superintendent ready to learn the area, meet residents

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – Berkeley County Schools’ new chief wants to hear from its stakeholders.

Hired June 17, Superintendent Dr. Patrick Murphy said he wants to get into the classrooms and talk to students. He also wants to meet with parents, teachers and community members.

“Getting to listen to folks; learning a little bit more about the area and the different perspectives will really help me as far as how we move forward, said Dr. Murphy on Friday’s Panhandle Live.

He didn’t get into specifics about the direction he wants to take the school system, but said if there are changes.

“I think it’s critical that everyone have an understanding of why the change needs to occur and that they also can contribute to what that change looks like.”

Dr. Murphy acknowledged he’d like to meet with learning communities like the Special Education community. He also talked about raising expectations across the board.

“We need to make sure that the support systems are in place, that they can reach those high expectations. I’ve seen when you put those things in place, kids actually exceed your expectations.”

Murphy has been Superintendent for Arlington Public Schools for the last decade He was Virginia’s Superintendent of the year in 2015.
