Local group advocates for local children with disabilities

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — There is a move in the mountain state ensuring equal access and opportunity for children with disabilities. West Virginia Developmental Disabilities Council, a 32-member state agency, is comprised of individuals passionate focused on improving lives.

“The Council is dedicated to improving the lives of all West Virginians,” said councilmember Christy Black. “By working hand-in-hand with citizens of our state to improve public policies and practices.”

Recent events involvingĀ child abuse allegations in a Berkeley County school only reinforced the importance of their work. Jefferson County member Brandi Beery emphasizes the power of knowledge and the huge role a resourceful community can play in the lives of families with developmentally disabled loved ones.

“Having your community, that you know who you can speak to (and) who can help or what process I need to follow through, instead of just feeling lost and helpless,” said Beery. “You get to build that village.”

The agency offers classes online via webinar for families and parents looking to educate themselves, and network with others – even from five hours away. For more information, visit their website at ddc.wv.gov.
