Jefferson County Commission votes to remove confederate plaque from courthouse entrance

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — The Jefferson County Commission voted Thursday to remove the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) plaque from the entrance to the Jefferson County Courthouse.

The Spirit of Jefferson reports that the decision was made after a 3-2 vote. No word of when the plaque will be taken down but it is reported that it would be returned to Polly Wharton of the UDC.

Last fall, the commission unanimously voted to keep the plaque. A resolution was passed the following month aimed at protecting all existing historical monuments, memorials and markers erected in the county.

The plaque honors Confederate soldiers from Jefferson County who served in the civil war. It was erected in May 1986.
