High heat and humidity expected Friday, this weekend

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — It’s hot in the Eastern Panhandle and predicted to get even hotter by Friday.

The Jefferson County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management has released a list of safety tips to keep you cool this summer.

  • Wear sunscreen with an S-P-F of 30 or above.
  • Wear light colored, loose fitting clothing.
  • Take breaks often in the shade when the weather is hot.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • Recognize the signs of heat related illnesses.
  • Dehydration, hypothermia, heat stroke, and heat exhaustion can be serious conditions that may lead to death.
  • Look before you lock and never leave a child unattended in a vehicle.
  • “If thunder roars, head indoors”…thunderstorms can be very dangerous.

Across the Eastern Panhandle, Accuweather predicts a high of 96 with high humidity. Saturday will being a high of 99. Lows will be in the mid-70’s after sunset. 

Baltimore Health Commissioner Dr. Letitia Dzirasa has declared a Code Red Extreme Heat Alert from today through Sunday.

That means the city will open cooling centers and extend public pool hours.  Saturday could be the most uncomfortable in Baltimore, with the heat and humidity making it feel like 110-degrees.
