MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The hearing for a man accused of fatally beating an elderly woman during a September carjacking has been rescheduled for Monday.
Adam Domer, 36, of Martinsburg, allegedly attacked Joan Staubs, 86, as she was getting into her car to leave for church on September 2 in the State Circle area of Martinsburg.
Authorities later determined Staubs died from head injuries. A state police report also revealed Staubs was struck by her car’s door as Domer was driving away with it.
A November 8 hearing for Domer on the murder charge was continued after he had a medical emergency, according to the Berkeley County Magistrate’s Office. Domer previously waived his hearing on charges of robbery, grand larceny and malicious wounding filed after the incident.
In a previous interview with WEPM, Winchester Avenue Christian Church member Kathy Gess described Staubs as a “very christian lady” who was heavily involved in their church.
“She was always ready to help other people and do other things. She was just an all-around nice person. It just boggles my mind. I can’t get over it. None of us can. We still can’t believe it really happened.”
Domer is being held in the Eastern Regional Jail near Martinsburg without bond.
