During Severe Weather Week, the American Red Cross reflects on 2018

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – It is Severe Weather Week across the Mountain State, a time for citizens and emergency workers alike to get ready for weather-spawned catastrophes.

Jason Keeling is the Executive Director American Red Cross of Northeast West Virginia. On WEPM’s ‘Panhandle Live’ Tuesday, he said no matter the disaster, Red Cross Volunteers are there to help.

In 2018, the organization responded to 60 home fires in Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan Counties.

Keeling says volunteers are there to offer help and shelter during other disasters, as well:

“We responded to a few flooding incidents. One major incident that happened last August in Martinsburg. We had to open up a shelter for a couple of days.”

The Red Cross is currently recruiting volunteers with one directive.

“What we work to do is to be the best part of someone’s worst day.”
