MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The Doughboy statue on King Street could soon find a new home at War Memorial Park in Martinsburg.

Steve Cattlett, Executive Director of Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Rec, said he feels fairly confident it will happen after talking with representatives from the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, the group that claims to own the statue.

“It appears that the ownership is the Women’s Auxiliary,” Catlett said during The Saturday Morning Rec Report. “I feel 80-plus-percent sure that this could work out.”

Catlett said they are already talking to a company about refurbishing the statue while it is being moved to a site near the park’s existing War Memorial.

“The time to get it refurbished would be in the process of moving it, Catlett said. “Once it’s placed at the park, if that does happen, it will look like a brand new memorial.” he said.

The statue has been at its current location since 1925.
