Berkeley County Waste Authority recaps successful 2018

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority is touting numbers from this past year as “very successful”.

Chairman Clint Hogbin was on WEPM’s “Panhandle Live” Monday to recap 2018.

Hogbin said 9.7 million pounds of material were collected and recycled by the authority last year. That’s up almost half a million pounds from 2017 and is the third highest level in the authority’s 27-year history.

He also said recycling numbers for electronics were down last by about 150,000 pounds due to advancements in technology.

“The material that is being brought now for recycling tends to be the newer material. It uses a lot of plastic. Now, you have plasma screens,” said Hogbin. “The heavy CRT weight is out. The cathode-ray tube material is very expensive to recycle. So, that’s why I was glad to see that number go down.”

Hogbin also noted that participation was down at the South Berkeley collection site although curb side pick up numbers were up.
