Charles Town man found guilty on 21 counts in violent 2016 home invasion

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — A Jefferson County man has been found guilty on multiple charges after shooting into a home occupied by eight people in 2016.

Devin Collins, 22 of Charles Town, was found guilty by a Jefferson County grand jury on two counts of first degree attempted murder, sixteen counts of wanton endangerment, one count of use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, one count of burglary and one count of destruction of property.

The charges stem from a November 8, 2016 incident in which Collins used a Bushmaster AR-15 to shoot his way into a home where his ex-girlfriend and eight others were located. Once inside, court records show he pursued three victims into a bedroom and shot the gun eleven more times into a bedroom door to gain entry.

The victims successfully fought back and disarmed Collins. Once on scene, police recovered the AR-15, shell casings, a hunting knife, brass knuckles and over 150 rounds of ammunition. A duffel bag outside of the residence also contained ammunition and a sawed off shotgun.

“This family endured a night of terror,” said Jefferson County Prosecutor Matthew Harvey. “It is nothing short of a miracle and obvious to me that our good Lord kept them safe that night.”

The jury deliberated for six hours Wednesday. Collins will stay in custody until he is sentenced on May 1.
