Great Frederick Fair deadly assault suspects face new charges

FREDERICK, Md. — Two teens face new charges after the deadly attack of a 59 year-old man at the Great Frederick Fair.

Two juvenile brothers, ages 15 and 16, have been charged for the assault that led to the death of John Weed from Mount Airy, Md. The incident happened on the evening of Friday, September 20.

The 15 year-old has been charged with manslaughter, first degree assault and two counts of second degree assault. The 16 year-old has been booked on two counts of second degree assault.

“We took a look at their investigation to determine what degree of involvement each of these individuals had,” Frederick County State Attorney Charlie Smith said. “Because of that investigation, we have not charged the 16 year-old with the manslaughter (charge).”

Speaking at a Monday morning press conference, Smith insisted the investigation continues, He could not give further details including why the teens have not yet been charged with murder.

“We have to ensure that the rights of the victim are considered, the rights of the defendants are considered, and the rights of the community. That’s the same in every case. We want to ensure that these men have a fair trial. That’s why I’m not commenting on any of that stuff.”

A Tuesday hearing has been canceled after the State of Maryland filed petitions to move the cases to adult court.
