MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Local kids got a chance to experience history like never before this weekend.

The For the Kids, By George Children’s Museum held a special event at the Caperton Train Station on Saturday, where participants got to learn about the dangers slaves had to face during their travels with an interactive Underground Railroad of their own.

After an informative speech by Rosa Clark, the Conductor of the Railroad, guests were instructed to get signatures from 5 friends of slaves while exploring the museum – looking out for slave catchers along the way.

Once the children received 4 signatures from friends, they could receive their 5th one in “Canada”, which was located in the skybridge of the train station.

Clark said, “Every guest made it through.  No one came back and told me they were caught.  That’s the reason why during my speech I told the children to ‘listen’ and ‘look’, because if they weren’t listening then they would have missed a lot of clues.”

Chris Amores, the President of the Children’s Museum acted as a friend of slaves with his energetic daughters, and said this is the second year in a row they’ve held this event.

He says they saw more than double the number of participants than last year.

Amores was more than happy with the turnout, and hopes that the participants will bring even more friends next year.
