Two armed robbery suspects shot by off-duty police officer near Martinsburg

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Berkeley County Sheriff Curtis Keller has confirmed two juveniles were shot by an off-duty officer during an attempted robbery.

The suspects entered the 7-Eleven convenience store at 1754 Williamsport Pike north of Martinsburg at around 4:37 Monday morning. The juveniles allegedly pointed firearms at a store employee and a patron.

“The patron, who was an off-duty officer at that time, backed away and drew his gun and identified himself to the two suspects,” Sheriff Keller said. “At which time they made a turn towards him and he fired at them, striking both of them.”

Once shot, one of the suspects fled the store and was later apprehended. The remaining suspect was detained by responding Berkeley County Deputies.

Sheriff Keller could not release which department the off-duty officer was affiliated with, but did confirm he was not a member of any law enforcement agencies in Berkeley County. The officer’s department is conducting their own internal investigation.

One victim was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment. The other was flown to MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. Both were listed under stable condition as of Monday. No other injuries were reported.

Sheriff Keller said the juveniles will be charged. The paperwork was still being processed Monday afternoon.
