Tractor Trailer Accident on I-81 Claims Life, Snarls Traffic

WILLIAMSPORT, MD — An accident involving a tractor trailer on northbound I-81 just over the Maryland border Friday morning has claimed a life.

Scanner traffic following the emergency response in Washington County, MD indicated the truck was discovered wrecked just after 1:30 Friday morning with the engine cold and no sign of the driver.

A Haz-Mat crew was dispatched just before 2 a.m. to pump fuel off. Heavy Duty Wreckers were called to the scene to also deploy airbags to check under the tractor trailer for the driver.

The ramps to that area were shut down for a time and the driver was located deceased by 4:11 a.m.

The scene and its ongoing cleanup caused traffic delays well into the morning in the area that affected traffic down to the Marlowe exit of I-81 in West Virginia.

No word from police or fire and rescue about what initially caused the accident.
