MARTINSBURG, W.Va.– A special Christmas tour of several churches in historic downtown Martinsburg will be held this Sunday as part of 250th Commemoration activities.
Eight churches are participating in the self-guided, walking tour event, which is set for Dec. 18 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Docents will be at the churches to provide historical information and notable features about the buildings. Refreshments and special music will be offered to visitors at many of the churches, which will be decorated with flowers and displays for Christmas. The event is free and open to the public and visitors are not required to be a member of any church.
“We are excited to offer Berkeley County residents a unique opportunity to learn about truly unique church history in our community,” said Matt Umstead, chair of the Berkeley County 250th Commemoration Steering Committee.
“At least some congregations were established before Berkeley County was formed in 1772.”
While listed below from north to south, the participating churches in downtown Martinsburg can be visited in any order:
•Trinity United Methodist Church, 220 West Martin Street (hosted by Martinsburg Cooperative Ministry)
• St. John’s Lutheran Church, 101 West Martin Street
• Calvary United Methodist Church, 220 West Burke Street
• Christ Reformed United Church of Christ, 117 East Burke Street
• First Baptist Church, 315 West King Street
• Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 West King Street
• First Presbyterian Church, 220 South Queen Street
• St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 225 South Queen Street
