MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Opequon Creek in parts of Berkeley and Jefferson counties exceeded its banks Wednesday following more than two inches of rain on Tuesday.
Water covered several local roads including Douglas Grove Road where a driver got stuck in the high water and emergency crews had to be dispatched to the scene.
Opequon Creek was expected to crest at 11.5 feet Wednesday afternoon, more than two feet above flood stage.
Among the vulnerable roadways when the Opequon Creek gets out of its banks, Bower Road in Jefferson County, Grapevine Road, Golf Course Road and the Van Meter Ford Pedestrian Bridge.
Throughout the course of the day, emergency services advised of multiple blocked roads due to high water in all three Eastern Panhandle Counties, including parts of Winchester Grade Road in Morgan County.
Emergency officials are keeping an eye on the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers as water levels were expected to fluctuate throughout the day Wednesday.
Roads closed Wednesday included:
· Baxter Road, off of Hedgesville Rd (Rt 9 west) in Hedgesville
· Allensville Rd in Hedgesville
· Douglas Grove Rd off of Rt 9 bypass in Martinsburg
· McCubbins Hollow Rd off of Apple Harvest Drive in Glengary
· Tuscarora Pike at the Shanghai Bridge at the intersection of Buck Hill Road
· Daisy Lane off of Swinging Bridge Road in Hedgesville
In Morgan County:
McCoy Road near Mesner Road
4700 block of Johnsons Mill Road
Winchester Grade Road near Shanghai Road
5200 block Winchester Grade Road high standing water.
Spillman Road near Winchester Grade Road
Lilly said both Opequon and Back Creeks peaked during the day Wednesday and were expected to be back below flood stage by late evening.
In Jefferson County, Bower Road was the main concern near the Opequon, but Deputy Director of the Jefferson County Office of Homeland Security And Emergency Management Dick Myers said they were also keeping an eye on the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers:
