Separate Shootings Last week Claimed Lives in Berkeley County

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department is investigating two shooting incidents in the county that resulted in death last week.

One occurred Friday morning, according to a press release from the department.

The release stated that at approximately 2:30 a.m. Friday, deputies responded to a reported shooting at Touch of Texas,
located at 12261 Winchester Ave. in Bunker Hill.

Deputies found 21-year-old Dianta Johnson, of Winchester.

He had been shot in the parking lot of the club after a dispute.

Johnson was transported to Winchester Medical Center and later died.

In a separate shooting May 3rd, deputies were called just after 9:30 at night to a home at 47 Landfill Drive in Martinsburg for a reported shooting.

Upon arrival, they found a 60-year-old male gunshot
victim in the living room. The male, identified as Lyle Marpole, had been shot in
the chest.
Deputies performed life saving measures on Marpole until emergency
medical services arrived. Marpole was then transported to Berkeley Medical
Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies were able to determine that Marpole and another male, identified
as sixty-year-old Thomas Cox, who shared the home, were involved in a verbal dispute that turned
violent when Cox got a firearm and shot Marpole in the chest. Deputies were also
able to recover the firearm used in the shooting.
Cox has been charged with one count of First Degree Murder.
Anyone with information on either of these incidents is urged to contact the Sheriff’s
Office at 304-267-7000.
