Pastor Nicksich talks about fire Saturday that damaged the Vanville Church of Christ in Martinsburg

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The congregation of the 120-year-old Vanville Church of Christ met Sunday, one day after a fire at their church building.

Pastor Dan Nicksich said he and about half of the congregation came out to the scene of the blaze Saturday.

Pastor Nicksich said about 130 people congregated Sunday in one of the buildings at the Berkeley County Youth Fairgrounds:

He said the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office is looking into a definitive cause for the blaze:

He said following the fire several people reached out to offer a place for the congregation. He says they’ll meet in their outside pavilion, as well, as weather permits. Of the photos shared during Saturday’s fire, one of the more poignant is of firefighters carrying the large wooden cross out of the building.

The blaze was reported at about 12:30 p.m. in the building located on Vanville Road. Flames were showing when fire crews arrived on the scene.

There were no injuries reported.
