MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — He has served Berkeley County for more than six decades.
Berkeley County Clerk John Small Junior tendered his resignation this week.
County Councilwoman Elaine Mauck was sworn in yesterday to replace him, and former County Councilman Dan Dulyea was appointed to fill her seat on the council.
The Council thanked the 87-year-old outgoing clerk, citing his commitment to Berkeley County.
Mauck said she appreciated his efforts to preserve the Berkeley County record.
Councilman Jim Whitacre said Small signed his marriage license.
Small was appointed County Clerk on September of 17, 1971 after joining the county clerkâs office in December
1956.
He is the longest-serving elected official in Berkeley County history and had been elected to his seventh, six-year term in 2016.
In a letter to the council, Small said he’d witnessed the spectacular growth
of Berkeley County. He said he has “always strived to provide helpful, honest and efficient service with a smile.”
