Funeral arrangements set for Mayor Hamill

RANSON, W.Va. — Ranson City officials have made plans to remember longtime Mayor Dave Hamill who passed away Friday after a yearlong battle with cancer.

Hamill will lie in repose in City Council Chambers at Ranson City Hall Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

His funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Asbury United Methodist Church.

Hamill spent 30 years serving as Mayor of Ranson.

U.S. Senator Shelly Moore Capito is among those who worked with him.

“He just always amazed me with his innovation,” Capito said.

Capito had worked with Hamill since her election to Congress in 2001.

She said during Panhandle Live he always had his information ready, which allowed her to get more done.

Charles Town Mayor Peggy Smith was also a guest Monday on Panhandle Live.

She said Hamill wanted to serve.

“Anyone that takes office in a small municipality, they are doing it because they truly love their city and want to help,” Smith said.

She and Hamill worked closely with State Sen. Herb Snyder (D-Jefferson, 16) on several annexation projects.

Smith said they were successful, but that it took a lot of work.

All flags in Ranson to be lowered to half-staff though Feb. 12 as a tribute to Hamill.

Several streets will be closed Wednesday between 1:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., including S. Fairfax Boulevard from 3rd Avenue to Lancaster Circle; S. Mildred Street from Lancaster Circle to E. 2nd Avenue; and, E. 3rd Avenue from Preston Street to Fairfax Boulevard.
