Former security guard sentenced to 14 years in prison after stealing from federal site

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A former contract security guard at a federal facility in Martinsburg will spend up to 14 years in prison after stealing firearms and other items from the government.

Christopher Yates, 52 of Martinsburg, was found guilty of stealing thousands of firearms, gun parts and ammunition from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ National Disposal Branch.

The incidents happened from 2016 to early 2019. Yates sold the property to people across the country.

AFT issued more than 1,200 referrals across the country, and have recovered 4,625 stolen guns and parts.

Yates will also have to pay $300,000.
