Fallen State Police Sergeant got his start in the Eastern Panhandle; Local Law Enforcement Head to Mingo County To Pay Respects

MINGO COUNTY, W.Va. — Services will be held today for a West Virginia State Police Sergeant killed in the line of duty.

37-year-old Sergeant Cory Maynard was shot and killed while responding to a shooting in the Matewan area of Mingo County Friday afternoon. He later died at Logan Memorial Hospital.

Maynard started his career in the Eastern Panhandle.  Berkeley County Sheriff Nathan Harmon says while he did not work with Maynard personally, he has only heard good things about the fallen officer.

Harmon says a “huge contingent” of law enforcement from the Eastern Panhandle will make the trip to Mingo County today to pay their respects.

Visitation will be held at 12 p.m. in the Mingo Central High School gymnasium. A funeral service will take place after that at 3 p.m.
