Driver Charged in Clearbrook Crash that Killed Inwood Woman

CLEAR BROOK, VA — An Inwood woman died after a head-on crash Monday near Clearbrook. Now, the other driver faces charges.

Frederick County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Warren W. Gosnell tells The Winchester Star 64 year old James Peyton Poland of Clearbrook admitted to speeding and had suspected drug paraphernalia in his pickup truck.

He’s been charged with manslaughter.

Poland was southbound in a 2019 Ford F-250 Super Duty in the 3200 block of Martinsburg Pike near Stonewall Elementary School when he swerved into the northbound lane, striking a northbound 2020 Honda Civic driven by Mary Stutts, 55, of Inwood. Stutts was pronounced deceased at the scene.

An investigator reports Poland admitted to taking prescription pills throughout the day including Suboxone, a synthetic opioid designed to block heroin cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
