MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — There’s still time to help the Union Rescue Mission in Martinsburg reach a short-term goal and get a match for those donations.
The Martinsburg Union Rescue Mission’s Emergency Family Transitional Housing will be the only one of its kind in Berkeley, Jefferson or Morgan Counties. The mission already owns the structure at 604 West King Street, but retro-fitting it into housing for families will require renovating it into 6 separate family units and corresponding office space for case management of the families in the units.
Rescue Mission Director Pastor Timothy Guerino says they’ve gotten an assist from the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle.
“The emergency family transitional housing, which we call the 604 Project, we kicked that off on November 11th. The United Way gave us a $200,000 matching gift. We’re at $180,000 and we just need $20,000 to match that,” he said.
Pastor Guerino is hoping to get things moving in the new year. “– that will give us $400,000. Our ultimate goal is $800,00,” he says, “but once we hit the $400,000 mark, we can then put it out to bid and get the ball rolling.”
Whether they go online to donate or drop donations off at the mission at 608 W. King Street in Martinsburg, Guerino asks folks to mark their donations to allocate them to the 604 project.

In Berkeley County there is a shelter for men and one for women, but no dedicated shelter for families.
