MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A ‘substantial’ water leak in Martinsburg Monday morning took several hours to get under control and disrupted water for up to 40 homes in an area around West Addition, South Tennessee, and South Georgia Avenues.

Late Monday evening, the city issued a boil water advisory for 400 S. Georgia Ave, 500 S. Georgia Avenue, Carolina, 300 and 400 blocks of S. Tennessee and Circle Drive.

The boil water advisory will be lifted once a clear lab report is received on the water in the affected area.  That could take up to 48 hours from the original advisory being issued.

Addition Street will be closed at S. Tennessee Avenue until further notice – except for local residents  according to an announcement from the city.

Utility crews began working on the leak at 4:30 in the morning Monday.

At 2:20 in the afternoon, the City of Martinsburg posted “The Water Department is actively searching for a substantial water leak in the area of W. Addition and S. Tennessee Avenue. There are approximately 30-40 homes currently without water in the area around W. Addition, S. Tennessee and S. Georgia as valves have been turned off to isolate the leak.”

By 7 p.m., the leak had been clamped but would later have to be replaced, resulting in reduced water pressure for some homes.

Later Monday night, the city posted a picture of utility crews and announced the leak had been repaired.
