MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department has announced arrests and the seizure of a large quantity of meth and fentanyl as well as two handguns.

On Thursday, December 11, 2025, Investigators with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) Criminal Investigation Division (CID), conducted an arrest and search operation at 35 Gall Drive in Martinsburg.

The operation resulted in the arrests of Samantha R. Gilroy, 47 and Thomas Clay Rutherford, 42.

Gilroy was taken into custody at a separate location on outstanding warrants stemming from narcotics related offenses according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Rutherford was arrested at the residence on an outstanding arrest warrant for probation violations, with the underlying offenses being felony narcotic-related charges.

A search of the residence resulted in the seizure of U.S. currency, approximately eighty-six (86) grams of suspected methamphetamine, approximately five grams of suspected fentanyl, two handguns, one extended magazine as well as ammunition.

Additional narcotics and firearm-related charges are pending against Rutherford. These charges will be based on evidence obtained during both the investigation and the execution of the search warrant.

The search of the residence was executed pursuant to a West Virginia state-issued search warrant obtained following a joint investigation by BCSO, ATF, and MPD. The arrest operation was carried out in addition by Investigators from the Martinsburg Police Department (MPD), Special Agents and Task Force Officers with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the BCSO SWAT Team along with WV State Police K-9
