CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — Early in 2025, the Jefferson County Commission announced a feasibility study for a potential Sports Complex in the county. In October, the Berkeley County Development Authority announced similar plans, including land already owned by the Berkeley County Commission, to be used for the complex.
Jefferson County Commissioner Cara Keyes, a guest on Wednesday’s Panhandle Live, was asked if Jefferson County would continue to pursue its plans to build a sports complex.
“We don’t want to have two of the same things,” Commissioner Keys said. “We need to be flexible.”
She says Berkeley County has “done a great job.”
“They have the land already. Berkeley County Development Authority has leveraged the past 20 years with the development along Tabler Station Road to pay for itself,” Keys says. “And then to to be able to have land for this type of development. You know, this is something that Jefferson County is now working on, but we’re behind. Berkeley County has over 200 acres for this project.”
She says the aim for leaders in Jefferson County is to not compete for the same thing. “If we do something, I want it to be different and I want us both to be successful,” Keys says.
