MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Economic Development and government leaders in the Eastern Panhandle met Friday afternoon for what was billed as a Regional Economic Summit.

On Monday, Berkeley County Economic Development Director Jennifer Smith said the county has the green light to pursue Project All Star.

She called it a “sports tourism convention center project that we’ve developing for over a year.” It would be located off Exit 8 in the Tabler Station Road area.

“The governor was supportive of our project,” Smith said, “So that is something that we are going to continue to develop. We are working with the sports facility company.”

So far, there are plans for eight basketball courts that could convert into 16 volleyball courts, pickleball, or “whatever else you would like to play.”

The center, which could hold 4,000 people, will serve as a Convention Center as well.

“We’re looking at flex fields as well, flag football, soccer, baseball.”
Governor Morrisey said he was in town to listen to those gathered at the Berkeley County Administrative building Friday afternoon.
“I want to know what’s on the people’s minds. I think this is an incredible part of the state,” Governor Morrisey said in a sit-down interview with the Panhandle News Network.  “It has the potential to really drive so much economic growth, provide great paying jobs for the citizens of our state. So I’m a big advocate of the Eastern Panhandle and want to make sure that it does well. And that’s part of the reason I’m here, to listen to what’s on people’s mind and then be educated so we can act intelligently.

Smith said more details about Project All Star would be coming soon.
