MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting Berkeley County.
Deputies say David Edward Browne, 29, of Martinsburg, was shot and killed Sunday by deputies after he attacked one of the deputies with a hatchet.
Investigators said Browne had attacked a woman in her driveway early Sunday morning. He then returned home on Jenny Wren Drive where he was destroying property in his own home that he shared with his mother.
Deputies said Browne suffered from mental illness and had been off his medications.
“Deputies immediately secured the hatchet and rendered medical aid until emergency medical personnel arrived,” a news release said. “Browne was transported to Berkeley Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased as a result of injuries sustained during the incident.
“A full investigation is currently being conducted. The deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in incidents of this nature.”
