MARTINSBURG , W.Va. — West Virginia State Police are looking for a suspect involved in a hit and run that killed a man in Berkeley County Thursday.

Trooper J.S. Racer of the State Police Martinsburg Detachment responded to the 1400 block of Shepherdstown Road just before 2 a.m. Thursday morning where he, along with an EMS worker, found Johnathan Ballou, 41, of Ranson lying on the ground in the westbound lane.

After attempting life-saving measures, Ballou was pronounced dead at the scene, reportedly as a result of the injuries he received in the hit.

A preliminary investigation indicates Ballou had parked his vehicle in the Dollar General store parking lot at the intersection of Eagle School Road and Shepherdstown Road before walking into the roadway.

A vehicle described as a dark in color small to mid-size SUV traveling westbound towards Martinsburg reportedly had struck Ballou.

Troopers say the driver of the vehicle did not stop or return to the scene.

State Police are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to contact their Martinsburg Detachment at 304-267-0001.
