MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Memorial Day Weekend will be a busy one on the roads, and for local law enforcement.  In addition to patrolling the roads, there will be a number of sobriety checkpoints planned for the weekend.

Earlier this week, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department announced it would be conducting sobriety checkpoints beginning Friday, May 23rd.

The West Virginia State Police have announced a checkpoint beginning on Saturday, May 24th in Berkeley County.

It will be conducted from 6:00 P.M. to midnight on U. S. Route 11, Winchester Avenue, just North of Evans Run Drive.

The secondary location will be in the 7400 block of U. S. Route 11, Winchester Avenue in the Martinsburg area of Berkeley County.
A press release from the WVSP says, “The primary purpose of the checkpoint is to educate the motoring public about the effects of driving impaired either by alcohol, drugs, or both. During the checkpoint, drivers will be checked for any other traffic infractions, as well.”

The event is funded through the Commission on Drunk Driving Prevention.
