CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — Storms that blew through the Eastern Panhandle claimed one person’s life and seriously injured another when their golf cart was struck by a falling tree at Locust Hill Golf Course. 

The call came out to first responders just before 5:00 Saturday afternoon. 

A spokesman with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s department confirmed the fatality of a male victim to the Panhandle News Network and said a second male sustained ‘serious injuries’ and was hospitalized as a result of the incident which occurred as a severe thunderstorm rolled through the area with high wind gusts and heavy rains. 

The JCSD spokesperson said more details about the deceased would be released officially on Monday out of consideration for his family. 

The storm system dumped more than two inches of rain and quarter-inch  hail in some neighborhoods.
