SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — As the administration changes in both the state house and the White House, Shepherd University President Dr. Mary Hendrix gave an update on the status of any federal funding changes.

Shepherd University President Dr. Mary Hendrix

“Like all of the institutions in the country, the first indication that we might be adversely affected came with a ruling on reducing indirect costs that come to a school. These are funds associated with grant awards.”  President Hendrix says she reached out to the congressional delegation (Senators Capito, Justice and Congressman Moore.  “Right now, there is a stay on that, so no movement going forward for that reduction.  That is the one that we are looking at very, very carefully.”
President Hendrix talked about funding from the Justice administration. “$30 million is going toward the purchase of a new maintenance facility,” she said. “and then most importantly, a new multi-purpose building on campus which will have a new dining facility and athletics offices, meeting rooms, training and treatment areas, a weight room. It is really going to be transformational.”

And she’s thrilled with the University relationship with new Governor Patrick Morrisey

“We are grateful to Governor Morrisey for being part of the team,” she said. “and the team in the Eastern Panhandle Blue Ridge Technical College and Shepherd University with West Virginia University and Marshall University.”

“To be able to keep students in West Virginia after they graduate from our respective colleges and give them new employment opportunities,” Hendrix said.

As to those new opportunities, “You’ve heard about the governor’s goal of new technology centers, new data centers all around.  We can all contribute in some way.”

Dr. Hendrix was recent guest on Panhandle Live, heard weekday mornings on The Panhandle News Network.
