SUMMIT POINT, W.Va. — A Summit Point woman who was on the phone with 911 was killed by her husband in a domestic incident earlier this month. 

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department reports that on February 9th, Tanya Lyons, 50, called Jefferson County Emergency Communications reporting a verbal domestic disturbance with her husband, John Lyons, 71, at their home in the 100 block of Keith Drive in Summit Point, Jefferson County, West Virginia.

That call came in at  9:38pm, and JCSD reports while she was on the phone with dispatch she screamed and “no longer communicated with the dispatcher.”

“While Deputies were responding to the residence, John Lyons called Jefferson County Emergency Communications and told them that he had shot his wife and believed that she was deceased,” according to the sheriff’s office..

After a short standoff, deputies placed John Lyons into custody.  Tanya Lyons was found dead inside of the residence. No one else was at the home.

A search warrant was obtained and investigators from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division

processed the crime scene. Investigators seized numerous items during the execution of the search warrant including the suspected firearm and ammunition.

John Lyons  has been charged with Murder in the 1st Degree. He was last reportedly being held at the Eastern Regional Jail without bail. 

“The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office would like to send their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mrs. Lyons. There are numerous resources in our community for victims of domestic violence. I would like to urge any victim of domestic violence to please utilize these resources before it is too late. These resources can be located by looking online and/or contacting your local law enforcement office,” according to the sheriff’s department press release.
