BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — The Morgan County Sheriff’s Department says counterfeit 100 dollar bills were circulated at a local business last month.
The bills in question were undetected by a detector pen used at the time.
MCSD reports they took the report January 30th of “counterfeit one- hundred dollar bills being passed at the Family Dollar at Morgan Square.”
Since the bill had been checked with a detector pen but passed the test, the sheriff’s department is cautioning retailers that when receiving large bills, “be vigilant for other indicators of counterfeiting. The bills should have security strips and water marks, check for duplicate serial numbers, and the ink should be difficult to come off.”
If you receive counterfeit bills, please do not attempt to detain the person using them, the sheriff’s office says. Instead, safely make a note of details like the suspect’s description, clothing, vehicle information, photos, videos, and direction of travel upon leaving.
Corporal Hedrick is investigating this case and can be contacted at (304)-258-1067 ext. 2008 with information.
