Panhandle News Network — Both the Berkeley County and Jefferson County Boards of Education met Monday. Our Al Gaige brought some of the highlights.
At the Berkeley County Board of Education meeting, Martinsburg High Football Coach David Walker recognized the football team for its recent state championship win. Board of Education President Long had this to say-
Musselman Principal Alicia Riggleman also presented Jordan Dube (Doo-bay), who was recently admitted to Vanderbilt as part of the QuestBridge National Scholarship Match Program.
Also at Monday’s Berkeley County Board of Education Meeting, Executive Director of Maintenance Ty Tyson presented a status update on bond and construction projects throughout the county. All of the current projects are on schedule and the Tomahawk Intermediate Addition is awaiting a final inspection from the Fire Marshall. Assuming all goes well, the addition will open up on Tuesday at Tomahawk Intermediate. Executive Director of Elementary Leadership Lewis Mullenax also presented the 2025-26 and 2026-27 school year calendar for approval, which were approved by unanimous vote.
Assistant Superintendent of Pupil Services Dr. Ron Branch presented Berkeley County File IGBH: Alternative Education for adoption. Vice-President Melissa Power asked an important question about punishments for students who break the rules.
The Board adopted the plan but also requested a work session to make sure teachers and students are supported in the future.
The Jefferson County Board of Education meeting was a mixed bag based on school presentations from Harpers Ferry, TA Lowery, Washington High School and Page Jackson Elementary. Jefferson County is excelling in Math and Science but falling a little behind in English. But teachers are working hard to improve scholastic performance. Attendance has also been improving throughout the year.
No action was taken at the meeting.
