MORGAN COUNTY, W.Va. — Firefighting crews from multiple states battled a mountain fire in Morgan County over the weekend that stretched across approximately 130 acres of state and private land, including parts of Cacapon State park, according to West Virginia Division of Forestry Region 2 forester Rosalie Santerre.

The blaze, dubbed the Cacapon Mount Fire by the Division of Forestry, began burning on Saturday according to reports by Morgan County Emergency 911. Forestry crews and the multiple area volunteer fire departments responded to the fire with windy conditions on Sunday causing it to spread past initial containment lines.

The Division of Forestry provided an update Monday that the fire has been contained and is not expected to expand beyond containment lines again. Smoke from the fire is expected in the area in the coming days but rainfall this week may improve conditions more quickly.

Santerre tells the Panhandle News Network that volunteer fire departments that assisted in the response included Great Cacapon, Paw Paw, Berkeley Springs, South Morgan, Hanchock, Needmore, Orleans and Reynold’s store with additional assistance from wildland firefighter crews from Washington County and Frederick County, Maryland.

Additional units included crews from Frederick County, Virginia and Boonsboro, MD.
