CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — In what amounts to a stay of execution regarding the possible closure of a Jefferson County elementary school, the Jefferson County Board of Education voted to table the idea of closing North Jefferson Elementary.
NJES had been the subject of public meetings as the school system seeks out efficiencies and considered closing the school and sending its students to other elementary schools in the county. A new Ranson Elementary School is being built down the road on a new campus in Ranson.
However, citing new information received by Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Chuck Bishop, Board President Kathryn Skinner suggested tabling the idea:
The Board agreed to table action at this time on North Jefferson Elementary School.
At the same meeting, the board heard a presentation on the Communities in Schools program from Mary Brittingham.
The program uses therapy dogs and at this time the CIS program is operating in five Jefferson County Schools.
In other business the board approved policies on attendance, student conduct, and shortage policies to align with state code. The board also approved expanding the system’s alternative education program.
