MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Friday marked the 19th year for Christmas Cash For Kids in the Eastern Panhandle.

Here’s Chief Elf Becky Linton, who along with the DHHR’s Kathy Bradley, answered a call 19 years ago and along with friends from radio stations WEPM and WLTF, made sure kids had toys at Christmas.

Last year, the program, which relies on donations from the community, helped more than 600 children in Berkeley, Morgan, and Jefferson Counties.

There is a vetting process. Many of the children receiving toys through Christmas Cash for Kids are being raised by grandparents or relatives.

Each year, local businesses like ROCS convenience stores put up donation canisters and Wal-Mart welcomes the shoppers. The goal this year is $50,000, which organizers are hoping to raise by the middle of December through a series of donation events as well as those donation jars:

The United Way of the Eastern Panhandle helps process the donations. CEO Penny Porter says the need is great:

On Friday the kickoff event at City National Bank got a sweet start with a donation from CNB of $1000 to get the season going.

WVRC Media and our Martinsburg radio stations have been proud to partner with Christmas Cash for Kids since the beginning.
