MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Martinsburg Police Chief Erin Gibbons says those inside Cobourn Field Friday night stayed calm following a shooting incident outside the stadium that injured three people sitting in the stands.
This week on Panhandle Live, Chief Gibbons talked about the shooting.
Chief Gibbons said the fact that fans kept their wits about them and didn’t panic allowed EMS to treat the three victims, who suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Chief Gibbons said many people attending the football game had no idea at the time that a shooting had occurred within 200 yards of a Martinsburg High School Football game.
He explained the decision from city police and Martinsburg Highschool administration to keep people in the stands
Chief Gibbons said following the incident, he called on the school to prohibit backpacks at athletic events.
On Tuesday, Martinsburg High School Athletics posted an announcement that “effective immediately, there are to be no bookbags worn at athletic events at Martinsburg High School.”
