MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – Albert L. Wright, Jr., president and CEO of the West Virginia University (WVU) Health System announced today the appointment of Mark O’Hern as president and CEO of WVU Medicine East, which includes WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center, WVU Medicine Jefferson Medical Center, and their affiliated clinics. O’Hern’s first day will be Monday, Nov. 4.
“I am excited to have Mark join our efforts to grow and serve West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle,” Wright said. “I have known him for several years and have always been impressed with his leadership, energy, and knowledge. I am confident in his ability to lead our eastern hospitals and clinics.”
O’Hern is currently a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) market president providing executive and strategic leadership to two community hospitals – UPMC East and UPMC McKeesport – several comprehensive ambulatory and surgery centers, and over 100 primary and specialty care practice locations. He is also the executive director of the UPMC Administrative Fellowship Program and serves on the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh, where he teaches master’s-level students studying healthcare strategy.

Earlier in his career O’Hern served as vice president of operations of UPMC East and UPMC McKeesport and executive director of community pediatrics, ambulatory services, and business development for Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
He has a Bachelor of Science and Master of Health Administration from Cornell University and serves on the boards of several community-based organizations, including the March of Dimes and the YMCA. He and his spouse, Allison, have two young boys.
